“According to the Fathers of the Church, for someone to be physically [or psychiatrically] ill and to praise God is a sign of spiritual health. The ascetic Fathers stress many aspects of this subject. According to St. Diadochos of Photiki, patience in life’s trials and thanksgiving for misfortunes is a second form of martyrdom. Then illness will be reckoned by God as martyrdom and the sick person will receive a martyr’s crown, according to Christ’s words, “He that endureth to the end shall be saved” (Matthew 10:22).
